Yes, its been said before, and I am going to say it again. For an office to function smoothly and efficiently, you need to have a functional calendar on hand to check dates, appointments, and to simply know who is going where, when. People often say to me, hang on a second, a calendar isn’t a piece of stationery, its just a… calendar. Yes it is, but the reason I like to classify it as stationery is because it is an extremely important thing to have. In my mind, it is on the same level as a stapler, ruler, even a pen.
Perhaps you are still not convinced? Recently, an experiment in Chicago focused on one office in the heart of the central business district. The researchers took away the calendars, and banned people from using any type of electronic calendar also. This continued for 2 weeks. The end result? Absolute chaos! Post-it notes were lying all over the place recording small memo’s, appointment times, who was in and who was out, and when people would be returning.
At the end of the trial, the receptionists were asked what the experience was like, and both of them said that it was not possible for the office to function properly without the calendars. So, to prevent a similar situation occurring in your workplace, perhaps you should consider getting rid of last years calendar, and ensure that you include an up-to-date version in your next office stationery order.
