It is unfortunately the case that in troubled financial times, book keepers and accountants are rarely, if ever, out of work. When a country’s finances are in trouble one of the first things that the Government does is to try and keep an account of everyone’s taxes, coming down hard on those who are slow at paying them.

You can still learn book keeping at your local community college, if you do well then you may want to go on and take your accountancy exams as businesses always need a good book keeper and a good accountant.

One of the reasons that businesses need good book keepers and accountants is because they can save you from paying a lot of unnecessary taxes to the Government. If you are self employed or have your own business there are all kinds of items that are tax deductible that you might never have thought of when you completed your own tax returns.

If you work from home for example, you can claim a certain amount of tax exemption on your heating, lighting and telephone bills. If you drive a car then you can claim for petrol at 40p a mile. Writers buy a lot of books and these are seen as part of the tools of your trade and therefore tax deductible.
