Collecting fountain pens has become a very popular hobby and it is easy to see why. You can pick up some nice old pens sometimes in charity shops and car boot sales and some of them can be worth a lot of money.  The most expensive fountain pen ever sold contains over 30 carats of diamonds and it is the only pen in the world to contain so many – over 2000 South African gems and the nib itself is hand-crafted from 18kt gold!

It was sold with the option of having your own coat of arms, signature or a portrait of yourself on it – where the heck would they have the room to put that?  Although the price of this beauty was never given out to the public, this thing was rumoured to cost nearly ?2,000,000! Now what kind of stationery could you possibly use to justify owning a pen like that? Would it cost ?1000 a sheet?

I doubt if this pen writes any better than my vintage Waterman on a sheet of good old Basildon Bond.  You can still buy very nice fountain pens at your local stationery store but these days it is hardly a practical gift, unless it is for a collector you know.

You can just buy me some plain old ink cartridges for Christmas, I spend enough on them every year!
